Renunciation of citizenship is intended for Israeli citizens who no longer want to be citizes of Israel.

Approval of the request to renounce citizenship takes a number of months due to its dependence on the Interior Ministry. Until the Ministry of Interior approves the request to renounce citizenship, the individual is considered an Israeli citizen for all matters.

In order to renounce citizenship you must appear in person at the Consulate and pay a fee of $85. If at the same time there is a need to issue a valid travel document, please refer to the section about issuing a new passport.

The criteria for submitting a request to renounce one's citizenship differ from person to person and are dependent on, amongst other things; updating one's personal status in Israel and the arrangement of one's obligations to the IDF according to law.

Accordingly, we recommend that in preparation for your arrival at the consulate to submit your request, you contact the consulate department by phone or e-mail, so that you will arrive at the consulate with the required and necessary documents.
