New Passport for Minors

Please Note: Any consular service provided for a minor requires the consent of both parents. Please read carefully the following instructions in order to ensure the required services can be provided to the minor.
If the passport of the minor was issued more than 5 years ago a new passport must be issued. You can find out when the passport was issued by looking at the issue date, which can be found on the picture page of the passport.

If the appearance of the minor has changed significantly, a new passport needs to be issued even if the current passport is still valid.

Another factor influencing the issuance of a passport for a minor is their status with the Israel Defense Forces.

In accordance with Israeli Law, any Israeli minor who has been living outside of Israel since the age of 16.5 years old must settle their status with the Military through the Consulate. Neglecting to take care of this issue will hinder the extension or renewal of the minor's passport.

Issuing a new passport takes two weeks. You can apply for a new passport either in person at the Consulate or by mail. If you choose to proceed via mail, please allow at least two additional weeks for shipping.

Applying for a new passport at the Consulate

If the parents of the minor are updated as married in the ministry of interior in Israel, only one parent is required to present him/herself at the consulate. However, they must bring with them the passport of the other parent. It is not necessary for the minor to appear in person at the consulate unless they are over the age of 16.5 and have yet to arrange their military status.

If the parents of the minor are not married or not updated as married in the ministry of interior in Israel, both parents must come to the consulate in person and present their original marriage certificate. It is not necessary for the minor to appear in person at the consulate unless they are over the age of 16.5 and have yet to arrange their military status.

If the parents of the minor are divorced the parent with custody over the child must bring a court order specifically stating that they have the authority to issue or extend the minor's passport and take them out of the country. A divorce settlement stating that the parent has full custody over the child is NOT sufficient.

If the court order cannot be presented then the other parent must also present him/herself at the consulate. If the other parent does not reside in the area, they must go the nearest Israeli consulate to them in order to give their consent.

If the other parent lives in Israel they must go to the Ministry of Interior.

The parents must bring with them:

  • The minor's old passport

Passport Extension for Minors

Passports issued to minors are valid for 5 years. However there are situations in which the passport is issued for a shorter amount of time.

The most common reason for this is the arrangement of military status by the age of 16.5. For more information on this matter please read "Arranging IDF Status".

Once the restrictions that prevented the passport being issued for its full length have been resolved you may extend the validity of the passport for the remainder of its length.

If the appearance of the minor has changed drastically a new passport must be issued even if the current passport is still valid.

The extension is free of charge. This service can be done whilst you wait at the consulate or you can send the passport to us by mail together with the relevant form.

Notice: Any consular service provided for a minor requires the consent of both parents. Please read carefully the following instructions to ensure the minor receives the required services.
