According to Israeli law, every child born to an Israeli citizen residing abroad must be registered at the Israeli consulate providing services to their region.

Please note that a minor inherits Israeli citizenship from his/her parents regardles of the child's place of birth. Therefore, even if the minor was born in the U.S. and is an American citizen the child is also considered to be an Israeli citizen. They will hold dual citizenship and as an Israeli citizen MUST be registered.

In order to register your child (issue an Israeli ID number), one of the parents must come to the consulate in person with the child's original birth certificate (this service can not be done via mail). If the certificate was issued in any state other than NY, NJ or CT an Apostille stamp must be attached by the relevant Department of State.

You must also bring valid passports of both parents, even if one of the parents is not Israeli.

Please note: If the parents are not updated as being married in the Interior Ministry in Israel an original marriage certificate must be presented at the consulate.

If the parents are divorced, the parent with custody must register the child and will have to present documentation proving they hold custody of the minor.

If, at the time of registration, you would also like to make an application for a passport, please bring:

  • 2 identical passport photos of the minor,
  • $33 payable by cash, credit card or money order in the name of the "Consulate General of Israel in New York".
  • There is an aditional $9 fee if you require FedEx delivery of the passport.
  • Both parents passports.

Please note that the passport application takes 2 weeks to process.
